Trusting Your Intuition: First Pulls

Today we pull our first cards. Take a deep breath. This is a sacred moment.
Here's the truth that most tarot books won't tell you: there is no wrong way to pull a card. The magic is not in the method โ it's in the intention. You are setting up a conversation with your inner wisdom, and the cards are simply the language you've chosen to use.
Let's start with a simple one-card pull. This is the foundation of daily tarot practice:
1. HOLD THE DECK with both hands. Close your eyes. Take three slow breaths.
2. ASK A QUESTION. Keep it open-ended. Good questions include: 'What do I need to know today?' or 'What energy should I be aware of?' or 'What is my intuition trying to tell me?' Avoid yes/no questions โ tarot speaks in themes, not in binary.
3. SHUFFLE. However feels right. There's no wrong way. Some people shuffle until a card jumps out. Some shuffle a set number of times. Some just shuffle until it feels 'done.' Trust your instinct.
4. CUT THE DECK. Split it into three piles, then reassemble in a different order. This is optional but it adds a layer of randomness that helps bypass your conscious mind.
5. DRAW YOUR CARD. Pull from the top, or fan the cards and choose one that calls to you. Again โ no wrong way.
6. LOOK AT THE CARD. Before you read any meaning, just LOOK. What do you see? What catches your eye? What feeling arises in your body? This is your first interpretation โ and it matters more than any book.
7. THEN READ THE MEANING. Use the Maison Rose library, a guidebook, or your own notes. Notice how the traditional meaning aligns with โ or differs from โ your intuitive impression. Both are valid. Over time, you'll develop your own relationship with each card.
8. JOURNAL IT. Write the date, the card, your question, your first impression, and the traditional meaning. Over time, your journal becomes your personal tarot dictionary โ more accurate than any published book because it's based on YOUR experience.
The most common fear beginners have: 'What if I pull a bad card?' Here's the reframe: there are no bad cards. Even The Tower, even Death โ they carry wisdom, not punishment. The cards don't cause anything. They reflect what's already in motion. You are safe.
Practice Exercise
Do your first one-card pull right now. Ask: 'What do I need to know today?' Shuffle, pull, and look. Write down: (1) the card name, (2) your first feeling when you saw it, (3) one thing in the image that caught your eye, (4) what you think it might mean for you today.
Reflection Question
How did it feel to pull your first card? Was there fear, excitement, resistance? Sit with whatever came up โ it's all part of your relationship with the cards.
